WNSO Patron: Profile

WNSO Patron Prof. Subedi

The WNSO is grateful to Professor Subedi for agreeing to be the Patron of the WNSO UK from January 2005. On this occasion Prof Subedi said “Our nation is going through a difficult period. But we all have to work hard, aspire high, help each other, and share information to maximize the potential of each and every Nepali in this competitive and globalise world. This will ultimately contribute to the greater good of Nepal and enable Nepali students to fly high the flag of Nepal as a proud nation. This organization has an important role to play in this regard”

Professor Subedi is currently working as a professor of International Law at the University of Leeds, UK. He also practices law as a Consultant to Mishcon de Reya, a leading commercial law firm in London.  Prior to this he has worked as a professor of International Law and Head of the Centre for Legal Research at the University of Middlesex in London. He has also worked in the University of Hull, University of London and institutes in The Hague, New York and Sweden.

He holds a D.Phil. in Law from the University of Oxford, an LL.M. with Distinction from the University of Hull, and an LL.B. and an M.A. from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. He was awarded the Dasturzada Pavry Prize by the University of Oxford for his doctoral thesis, the Josephine Onoh Memorial Prize by the University of Hull for best LL.M. student of the year in 1988 and a prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship by the British Society of Legal Scholars in 1997. He has been a recipient of a number of scholarships and fellowships from various organizations including: the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the UK, The Hague Academy of International Law and the International Law Commission of the UN.

He has worked as under secretary in Nepal and has represented our country in various international conferences and meetings, including the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. He was Nepal’s candidate for election to the UN International Law Commission in 2001 and was supported by 60 States.

He was decorated with a high State honour (Order of Gorkha Daxin Bahu III) in 1998 by late Majesty King Birendra. Her Majesty the Queen of Britain made him an honorary OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2004 for his services to international law. He is current Chairman of Britain Nepal Academic Council and plays advisory roles in a number of British and Nepali organizations.

Also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts of the UK, Professor Subedi has membership in all major international organizations of International Law.  He currently represents the UK in two Committees of the International Law Association – Committee on International Law on Sustainable Development and Committee on Water Resources Law. He has published widely in all major areas of international law in most major international law journals. His research interests include International Economic/Trade Law, International Environmental Law, and International Law of Human Rights.
